Wooly Mammoth Upper Jaw Section (WM-25)
Wooly Mammoths are considered by many as a symbol of the last Ice Age. Widespread exposure through special programs on the Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channel have helped to make the Wooly Mammoth a household word. Mammoth teeth are considered a prize in most collections.
Dredged from the North Sea off Holland by fisherman, these teeth have lay submerged in salt water for 20,000 to 200,000 years. Careful drying and preservation is required to preserve these delicate fossils. These teeth have been dried for 5-7 years and coated with a preservative.
Species: Mammuthus primigenius
Age: Late Pleistocene
This is a section of the upper jaws (maxilla) of a Wooly Mammoth. The preservation on the bone and tooth is exceptional. Fine detailing on the bone makes this specimen stand out - notice the porsity of the bone on the backside - these air bubbles in the bone reduce weight while allowing maximum strength - and by the way allowing the animal to raise its head. An exceptional example at an affordable price!
